I remember when I sold my account back in 2008, never went back.
Got enough money to buy myself 6 months supply of alcohol to celebrate being away from that
cancerous community.

I sold mine which had a few party hats for $500 AU to a friend of a friend's younger brother.
I wouldn't recommend selling it online as Jagex really cracked down on that - most of the time
the buyers are either scammers or Jagex employees.

I actually enjoy the cancer here.
Sometimes you have to pick your poison rather than just accept what the masses of people blindly
take as normality.

do people even pay more than like 20$ for an account?

I remember that I never really got into runescape. I had a friend who really wanted to get me to
play a lot, and I dabbled in it a tiny bit as result. Pretty sure the toughest thing I beat was a
vampire as the boss of an early quest.
This friend of mine had basically reached some of the highest possible advancements you could
make with a character, decked out in all the best gear, loads of the greatest of items and
weapons. There pretty much wasn't a single thing he owned that wasn't right up there at the very
cap of what he could get without spending money. At the very least, he had thrown out almost
everything equipment-wise but his dragon armor and other such absolute endgame things, since
anything lesser was basically worthless to him.
And then they lowered the gear cap for free players. Suddenly, this friend of mine had a vault
full of stuff he couldn't use, and was no longer wearing that dragon armor he had worn for so
long, ejected from his equip slots in his ineligibility.
in a single change, he had gone from being surrounded by the fruits of his grand labors and nigh
untouchable to basically all the way back to square 1, in the middle of a high-level area.

Back then it was super rare to have an account with nearly maxed stats on everything where no
matter what skill you were using you could make bank with time spent.
I could have sold it for more if I kept playing and never sold the party hats - but that was
before the game became shit. I'm sure the need for a maxed out account is worth nothing now and
the only thing people want are your items/money.

Yup, that's another reason I was glad to get out when I did.
Even though I was a member, I could see the economy was going to have a huge backlash and shit
was going to go down for everyone; f2p and members alike.
