man it's been a while since i've had to do these
i was always a little confused about the third valence shell though
they tell you in school that it can also only hold 8 electrons but the actual rule is 2(n^2) so
it should be 18, right?

it can hold up to 18 but the outer shell fills up first before it does, therefore the third
reaches 8, hen the fourth reaches 8, then the third reaches 18, and the fourth goes to 18, and
that's all you need to know to solve these.

Its a hell of a lot more complicated than that, look up orbital filling if you actually care.

this is not how this works
seriously this atomic model was already wrong nearly a hundred years ago

Yep, same with most of what they teach in early high school science

Unless your teacher has a degree in chemistry.. Which most sadly don't.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT. THERE AREN'T ENOUGH ORBITALS. IT ONLY GOES UP TO 2S

Like everything else, most early taught examples are technically wrong, but great for explaining
the system.
When you get down to it, there's no one model that's actually 100% correct, because if there was,
that'd be the only model we taught. Different models do different things, and this one is a great
way of showcasing the concept of orbitals, even if it's wrong.

what is supposed to go in the boxes? some instructions would be nice.

Numbers, The atom has X amount of electrons in each "shell" (layer), and you need to tell it how
many it has based on it telling you the element and number of neutrons.
