Sounded familiar, then I remembered
This is Bad Apple

Sometimes it must be surreal to be ZUN and see people doing things like this.

Why do Japanese people have such a hard-on for 2hue music? Is it all lifted from actual folk
music? I get that it sounds neat, but it's weird to see all these people doing covers for a video
game soundtrack.

It could just be like Korobeiniki, in that it was stuck into a game, despite being an older song.

But that's wrong.
There's a difference between a game using a piece then getting popular enough that everyone
recognizes it as coming from that game and someone actually doing all their own original
compositions.
Fuck, Bad Apple itself is almost to the point of being some ass-backwards version of that since
more people recognize that one vocal arrangement than the actual PC98 track.

So, the Touhou guy (not sure of his name, because no matter how much time I spend on /f/, I just
can't get into Touhou) writes all of his own music without borrowing anything? Bad Apple is
something he wrote, and then it took off as a pop song?
I don't know the background, so I'm genuinely curious.

I seem to remember he originally wrote music, then started making games.
He's as much of a musician as a programmer

It's possible. ZUN is primarily a musician. He's said so himself in the past that he created the
games around the music and he even writes the music before creating any characters or stages. The
games were a way to put his music out there.
He's also put out 7 "story albums" so he has a lot of music so I wouldn't be surprised if some of
it has more direct influence from places as that's a LOT of music.

He has a lot of influence from other japanese music, a lot of the progressions he uses are
similar but he arranges it differently (not taking away from him, he's a great musician), with
different instruments and catchy melodies

Yes, actually.
ZUN wrote this thing.

This was done based on that song, and got popular enough that a small folk group did a cover of
it, apparently.

Just to show how big Touhou, especially the music, is in Japan, here's a list of groups that do
covers, arrangements, etc of mostly or solely Touhou music.
https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/List_by_Groups
Note that the index box cuts off at F but the list continues all the way to Z, and also that
these are just the ones that have been active recently.
ALL of these groups do Touhou-related music, and the vast majority do minimal original stuff.
Ninety-nine times anything these guys do is going to have a melody based off of ZUN's original
compositions.
Knowing you aren't that into Touhou, it makes sense that you'd be skeptical. I've been a huge fan
for a while and it still stuns me when I look at the raw amount of stuff this one guy's kicked
off with his weird shmup games.

Not many people, even here, seem to fully grasp how huge Touhou is today even in its reclining
state. Even kids over there are getting into it for the first time whereas over here the fanbase
is pretty much just aging 1:1 with its old/current fans.
That being said, ZUN has a second kid on the way now so I expect his pace to slow.

Also worth noting: it has its own conventions, and they keep adding extra events because they're
too popular.
https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Reitaisai
This isn't like a comic-con where everyone gets together to talk about a shitload of comics from
all kinds of companies. This is an entire huge building filled with nothing but people buying and
selling Touhou doujins, fangames, music, and whatever else you can think of.
I think a big part of it is how the setting is just defined enough to be interesting without
being too specific, and how ZUN approaches fan content and canon. As long as nothing tries to
claim being "official" you can make and sell any sort of Touhou stuff you want, and he gives the
characters a good direction without laying everything out on the table so fans can form their own
thoughts, and he has no problem with making nods to fan ideas.
This is the part where I cut off the rant because I have to go to work, but the most interesting
thing about Touhou is how long its been around without the fanbase dwindling. There's a lot to be
discussed as to the why and how.
