Although I recall seeing something about birds that was along the lines of if you leave for a few

They can bond really strongly with one person. My dad had a quaker that he had raised for like 15
years. When he passed away it kept calling for him (by name, they're quite adept mimics and
talkers) for about two weeks. After that she sat in the corner barely eating or drinking for
another couple of weeks before she died as well. We tried to play with her and get her engaged
again, but she didn't seem to want anything to do with us without my dad there anymore.
