that's not very peaceful (calm)
also why didnt they keep going with this slice of life anime? it was very successful, surely
there must have been a lot of money in continuing

The show absolutely bombed anon, there's a lot of factors that went into why but it did not do
well in Japan and was only marginally more popular here. It's just comparatively more popular on
4chan than any where else.

the viewer had to be well-versed in Japanese language and culture to be able to appreciate most
of the humor and references (I sure as hell wasn't). It was a little too niche to be successful.

Anon, anime is made for a Japanese audience not for you. Studios only really started looking at
the West for income in the past 2 or 3 years.

I think he knows that.
IMO the thing goes like this:
Nearly All anime is made for Japan. Most anime enjoyed by westerners is enjoyed by the Japanese,
but only a relatively small subset of all anime, of which most is liked by the Japanese, is
enjoyed by westerners. There are a few shows that for one reason or another are loved by the west
and disregarded by Nippon (hence 'Japan has shit taste'), Cowboy Bebop and Panty & Stocking come
to mind. And there are a few very rare cases like Big-O were the revenue of western sales is
enough to actually have some say in the future of the series.
And then there is Nichijou.
A series riddled both with very Japan specific elements such as kanji humor, cultural references
and a SoL theme as well as plenty of 'random' jokes and far less 'moe' than anything released by
Kyoani before or after. A series with animation both smoother and more detailed than 90% of
movies and anything that's ever aired on TV, with a budget to go with it, about which most
viewers don't even care. The only people that could give a damn about Nichijou are obsessive
anime viewers that have a western background and a more-than-superficial knowledge base of life
in Japan and the Japanese language, as well as a passion for good animation (e.g. 4chan).
Nichijou was spelled for disaster from the start and we only got it in the first place because
Kyoani needed something to train their then new batch of animators on.
