why on earth did "kek" become synonym with a short burst of laughter on 4chan?

There's a long winded history and a merging of several different memes from different places.
The most obvious example is the Horde laughter from WoW (autofiltering "lol" to "kek"), based on
the Korean version of "Haha" (kekeke).
The less obvious example is that 4chan has a long history of corrupting LOL, including lul, lulz,
and lel. When [s4s] was founded, these corruptions of LOL expanded and KEK became the most
popular.
Warcraft kiddies and [s4s] kiddies merged, and Kek took on its current form today.
