It's definitely very wierd. I guess that particular kind of wierdness (dark/psychological) just
resonates strongly with some people who then become cult followers.
However, I dropped it after watching the first episode, so I wouldn't really know.

Also, isn't 'creepy and mysterious shit happening via the internet' what the anime is all about?
It kind of makes sense for the fandom to express itself, by creating these 'mysterious' websites
and 'wierd' animations.

It's funny yes.
Lain hit in the late nineties; together with the Wachowski "whatevers" movie Matrix.
That was the first real exposure to "OMG WHAT IF REALITY ISN'T REAL" of the mainstream. Certainly
not the first that tackled this, but the most memorable, simple enough movie. And it made the new
edge Jesus of main characters for years to come.
Now Lain on the other hand was way "deeper" or at least more esoteric and in no way as simple
structured as the Matrix movies.
Take a look at Ergo Proxy for example.
Sure that's a very dark and edgy anime with a complicated story told in a complicated way, but
it's all there, you COULD figure it out on your own, all the metaphors, if you just think hard
enough.
But I don't think the same was possible with Lain, it was just too convoluted and abstract.
That's the reason all those communities around it formed, not to just indulge in people approving
your taste, but also as one of the earlier "let's figure this shit out together" chans, like
Lainchan. It still existst to this very day, due to the popularity it recieved back then.
Think of it as the Dark Souls of 90s anime.

>Wachowski "whatevers"
They're still brothers.
