It's funny because it's a subversion of expectations. Since the black man is being nice and you
have an expectation of the old, lady to be nice back, instead she says one of the worst thing
possible to him in response.

but then again it's set soon after the slavery was banned and not everyone was happy about it,
this old lady included, so her reaction is quite proper and the joke stands only on the N word
which may have been funny then, but in todays standarts no comedy would dare to go that far,
which is a shame
