Firefox just started automatically downloading swfs after the last update, what about:config
settings do I change to re-enable embedding?

clarification this is firefox developer edition. On standard firefox its still working, so this
change is on the way to standard in the near future.

this might be your problem, you're already "in the future" so Firefox Developer Edition no longer
supports NPAPI
