[_] [G] Probably the best space battle game ever made Anonymous 05/20/10(Thu)10:22 No.1266384
One of the most enjoyable in my 23 years of hopeless addiction to the vidya. See if you can beat
it.
Also yeah I know it's old and been on jewgrounds, suck my dick.

can somebody explain to me how the resupply/get more/better ships mechanic works? is it just luck?

There is none. If I understand it correctly, each ship type has a certain point value (fighters =
1, destroyers = 3, testudons = 5 or something), and then each force in a battle has the same
points value.
So in theory you're always evenly matched. Yes, including those "fighting two or three enemy
forces" matches - since they fight each other as well as you.
In practice, though...

Ehhh... testudons are worth 10. My mistake.

definitely not against the space station, and a destroyer is easily worth >3 fighters in practice

10 fighters would totapwn a testudon solo, though. Any idea on what these values are based on?

I didn't say they got the points balance RIGHT, just that's how it was set up.
And a lot of the battle is situational. 9 fighters versus 3 destroyers can be a major win for the
fighters or a major win for the destroyers - depending on whether one side stays grouped while
the other gets split up. My money says "destroyers", sure, but 9 fighters versus 1 destroyer,
three times in a row, is an easy win for the fighters.
And ten fighters are a MUCH better choice for pounding a testudon than three destroyers.
Space station's worth 35 points all by its lonesome.

I got the values just by observing the comparative forces ("you have 18 fighters" versus "the
single enemy force has 12 fighters and 2 destroyers"). Not sure how the programmers got the
values. Probably it was just a top-of-the-head, adjust-as-I-test-it thing.

I'd say this is due to statistical probability. 10 fighters are much more likely to split up
(somewhat) than 3 destroyers. The fact that 10 fighters are stronger than a tetsudon OTOH comes
from the fact that the testudon is stronger against single opponents than against groups due to
its weapon being direct fire single-shot.
So it's kind of a game of fighters defeats tetsudon defeats destroyers defeats fighters. In
theory. In practice, of course, a combined force seems best.
I wonder how the composition of the forces is selected, though. It seems like I'm always the side
with more fighters, leading to more losses through poor strategy and splitting up.

What I especially like is the storyline. I mean, who hasn't dreamed of being telepathic dictator
of the galaxy?

even the music is fuckawesome

Man what, I just died right after killing the mothership. The game let me proceed, but after
that, EVERY LEVEL HAS AN ENEMY MOTHERSHIP FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
