A bum. Ninja weren't a societal class like samurai were, they were just spies and assassins, and
like anyone in that line of work, they kept it a secret. A 'masterless ninja' would look to
anyone else like a regular dude whose country was conquered or destroyed.

a ninja is bound to his village/clan (mercenary) or to the family of his master and not a person
(like the master). so if the actual master died the next master would be his son or son-in-law

I would say Rogue Ninja (Naruto Definition Unfortunately) but that definition only applies to a
Ninja who has betrayed his/her clan and not so much a definition of a Ninja in the event that
he/she becomes masterless. Other wise a Theif comes to mind.
