Still watching it, but the fact that the character stays the same for person although the
pronunciation varies makes me wonder if a japanese can understand a chinese text even though they
can't pronounce it?

The way Japanese write is set up differently from Chinese. The Japanese mix Kana, their own
alphabet, with kanji which they borrow from Chinese. The characters mean the same thing, but
Chinese write exclusively with kanji, so I assume the Japanese would be able to understand
solitary signs or combined signs, but not sentences.
