i dont believe that. nothing can be infinite. science just hasn't proven it isn't infinite yet.

there's a reason why the infinite space theory is called a theory, because it is only a theory
and has no proof. just like the big bang theory for example. scientific evidence isn't always
solid evidence, what is fact today can be disproved tomorrow

A "theory" has logic and proofs behind it. A "hypothesis" doesn't have proof to support it yet.
Scientific terms are not the same a literary terms. Learn your scientific terms before using them
  in conversation.

Actually a "Hypothesis" is an educated guess as to the outcome of the scientific method's
problem. Theory is inconclusive though there is evidence to support. Sounds like you need to
brush up on your Scientific Method kid.

  Oh, right.

>> [_] Number Cruncher 11/22/11(Tue)22:56 No.1579497

  >>1579494
"educated guess" is the terminology science educators fall back on when they realize their
students are too stupid to grasp the difference between an individual conjecture that has yet to
be tested, and a series or system of such conjectures that have thus far been supported by
multiple lines of evidence, and yet to be disproven within the range of their appropriate
  application.

children tend to have a hard time differentiating between "because it works with what we already
know, and makes logical sense" and "durrr, because i pulled it out of my ass"

  >>1579497
incidentally, and not unrelated; the legislatures who write state standards (at least where I
teach) have a hard time grasping this subtle distinction too. look at some of the legalese
mandates in any state or counties science standards, and it becomes pretty obvious why wikipedia
experts such as yourself maintain this misconception.

So basically what you're saying is that you've got a chip on your shoulder and you're being a
cunt because the guy's using what he was taught?

Right. Couldn't be that the phrase "educated guess" cuts out any possibility of misunderstanding
by those who don't understand the distinction (which apparently is a whole lot of people if
you're to be believed!) and therefore maybe avoiding arguments on the topic by those with an even
slighter understanding of science than us lowly peons who aren't actually trained in the field.

>> [_] Number Cruncher 11/22/11(Tue)23:32 No.1579513

  >>1579504
No, because its apparently doesn't cut out that misunderstanding. You still get many, many people
who see the word hypothesis (or theory for that matter), and the only connection their brain
makes is "educated guess", which they then simplify to to just "guess".

A hypothesis is NOT an educated guess. its not any type of guess. Is their uncertainty?
absolutely! But is it a guess based on random or subjective input? No. Personal or political
Bias? No. It is a well informed, well researched prediction, and to use the word "guess"
regardless of qualification or context is not only lazy and disingenuous, but further promotes >>1
  579400 "only a theory" bullshit.

>> [_] Anonymous 11/22/11(Tue)23:57 No.1579524

  >>1579513
I understand where you're coming from, but to jump on someone for it (smug as he may have been)
the way you did was beyond an overreaction. What you're doing here is treating (and I use that
word very lightly) the symptom without treating the cause.

You still can't fault the guy for being a victim of a shitty education system. He probably only
has a slight interest in science and most likely isn't pursuing a higher education in the field--
yet he also probably understands the difference between a guess and a hypothesis and is merely
putting it in the simplest terms he's been taught for better or worse.
