In the interest of establishing a precedent by which crimes against humanity could be tried by a

more of an interest in having a serious trial and making sure justice was done than they did in
acting like animals.

warfare, around the same time that peasant infantry with pikes started getting used as an

For one, The allies did not need to torture anyone for the secrets of nazi technology. They were
more willing to make a deal where the nazi scientists came to work for their space programs, and
in return the allies didn't kill them. This is part of the prelude to the space race that got
wrapped into the cold war.
Hitler's death after falling into custody of the allied forces is a given, yes, as is the fact
that there's really no information they need from him that they can't get from his aids or his
papers. We certainly know enough about Nazi Germany without ever having questioned Hitler. But
the manner of his death would not have been to drag him out behind the bunker and do him like Old
Yeller. They needed him for the same reason they needed the other members of the Nazi Party,
which was for a trial, and to indicate that order had been restored and the war was over.

soon-to-be Cold War, any knowledge at all about Germany could be a great help for either side. In
