Is there anything that compares in this modern age? Any fan work that could hope to compare in

Something has been lost largely thanks to the Internet. Fansubs were never a problem because the
means of distribution meant that access was highly limited compared with the copies sold by anime
producers to turn a profit. Now with torrented fansubs, this old scheme for making money on anime
has died and studios resort to targeting the lowest common denominator to get the DVD sales
needed. In addition, in a span of just 12 years you have gone from the youngest people at cons
largely being 16 to being children. The average age over all has declined, and the maturity level
of the scene as a whole has also declined with it.
