Attack the monster, and before you kill it, press A to load your save. You will still be in combat with the monster, but when you kill it the monster will still be on the map. Press S to save your experience and repeat. Upgrade using the statue when you can. When you get bored of this, go up to the next level and level grind near the blue wizard to increase your level. Before long you will be able to burn your way through the tower, killing everything in one hit. However, your reward for doing so is getting to fight a lame boss and seeing some white Moonspeak. Whatever you do, don't save and restore before a scripted event. Doing so will make the game unbeatable.

The bad thing about DEF is that you can pump it too much, not get attack, and then you can't kill those monster with too much DEF
