Then Mewtwo Strike's back would happen and there would be a timeskip. THE FUCKING END. But as we now know it, they changed it when the Kanto series was about 3/4 done. Pokemon did not end after the Kanto League. Consequently, it sucks and should end.

The games are genuinely fun, and I've heard that the more recent editions to the series are a bit more mature when it comes to strategy and such. However, I can't help but wonder if the series HAD ended with the original movie. I think we'd have all enjoyed that shit a lot more.
