Sex is less of a taboo in Japanese culture than it is in American culture. That's why, as you
say, something like the Disney Channel or Nickelodean couldn't do something like this, even
though the maturity of the humor is on the same level as the shows that are on those channels.
Basically, because of a difference in social norms and taboos, Japan is able to produce things
that can't be done on American television. Whether you personally like it or not, it is something
that's unique and different in the eyes of American viewers, and that uniqueness is what draws
the fans.

I'm not upset that people like what I don't like. I just don't like their justification they give
for liking it. At least the /mlp/ folks are comfortable with the fact they're watching a show
they realize is comedy on a level aimed at kids. I don't like that show either. But at least they

Buy you're spot on with that sex is less a taboo in Japan. All those early ports of games had
countless sprites of women with next to no clothes on edited to have clothes on or be less

Nah, just in general. I guess I just saw this and it was the last straw. I had to say something.
Can't disagree with that last part. /f/ has some cool stuff. I like to come by. I used to watch
anime growing up. You know, Toonami. And there are a very select few anime titles that I have
watched the last 5 years or so. Usually they are not the cookie cutter typical anime that seem to

All of these are valid criticisms. My biggest problem is the focus on high school. Japan is so
focused on this time and it's so short. I have this picture of 22 year old japanese walking
around depressed all day long because high school is over and there is no where to go but down. I

I didn't like the Hangover. But I probably would have liked it more if I hadn't seen 3 different
trailers for it before the movie came out, 2 different trailers when the DVD came out and
countless people telling me the jokes themselves. When I actually saw the movie I felt like I had
seen it before. Trailers ruin comedies. I think Robot Chicken is funny sometimes. And yeah, it's
a bit above anime in a maturity level. But it's still geared down a bit.

I mean, I'm going to tell you that British comedy is all intelligent and that Monte Python is
super smart, but stuff like Peep Show is quite a few levels ahead of anime. A show like, always
sunny, yes that has people acting nuts. It has moments of, that would never happen. But not on a
corney level like anime. Maybe corney isn't the right word. I can't really put my thumb on it.
Anyway, there are plenty of really dumb show with bad comedy in the US. Whether is CBS with the
Bing Bang Theory or How I met...... or NBC with their, "we're smarter because we don't have a
laugh track". All their shows are just people saying dumb things and then a straight man reacting
to it. Anyway, I stand by my anime disney channel comparison. It honestly reminds me of a lot of
the show I watched back in the day on disney. They're pretty similar.

Their jokes are set up similarly. It's just a similar brand. Again, if you like it that's fine.
But let's not pretend it's adult humor that other people don't get. Or it's just the cultural
difference. Hell, I went back and watched all of Goosebumps and enjoyed it. I have no idea why. I
think it's that it's the 90s setting. I miss the 90s and I don't think I've ever seen a show so

I'm not going to say this is an easy question to answer. Clearly there's a difference between
something like Dexter's Lab and something like Arrested Development. I think everyone can agree
on that. Both shows I enjoyed, but one as a kid and another in high school/college. Where does
anime style humor fit in? Somewhere in the middle imo. But they kind of gags and characters and
subject matter, minus the sexual situations, really remind me of shows and characters from the
disney channel. It's not a perfect comparison, but I stand by it.

The reason it was so awesome was the concept was genuine and new like Seinfeld.
It had 4 guys for the first 6 seasons stuck on a ship, so they had a lot of sexual frusteration,
and none were particularly mature so they did stupid stuff you and your friends would do in the
same situation. They could do anything they wanted because it was scifi so the stories just kept
coming with new ideas... until season 6 with Kochansky, but even she wasn't so bad.
