The British had more fighters, but not by a whole lot. The split was around 6,000 American to
7,000 British.

The Germans were more trained than the allies, and probably just as skilled if not more than the
really good Japanese pilots before they all kamikaze'd early on in the war. On the other hand,
the Americans had a mediocre air force that was focused mostly in the pacific, which made their
European air forces rather unskilled and outnumbered. The Brits did not have a great air force
and mainly focused on bombing the shit out of German manufacturing.
One of the main factors that contributed to such obscene kill counts is the fact that the
Russians were absolutely terrible pilots. Another, is the fact that the bombing runs by the Brits
and Americans, while moderately effective, always resulted in horrible losses, because bombers
are slow and weak.

On a conceptual level: The Germans needed lots of skilled fighter to defends against the allies
bombing runs that were protected by very minimal amounts of fighters. And on the side, they
massacred the Russian air force, which didn't matter because they were overrunning them with
infantry.
