It's expensive. This guy sells those things on eBay for a couple hundred bucks a piece.
Watch the video where they use cement, seems a lot more economical.

This really upset and disgusted me for some reason. At first I thought it was because I looked
down on killing ants for entertainment, but then when the thing came out of the ground I realized
  that wasn't it at all.

For some reason this kind of...thing...just terrifies me. Patterns in nature are just disgusting

I know, it's shitty just to fuck up nature for entertainment, but consider that people have
plenty of good reasons to exterminate ants anyway. Maybe they used an anthill on a property that
had already been exterminated for other purposes (habitability without deadly fireants).

Fire ants are incapable of thinking, let alone feeling pain, on a sentient level. I doubt they

This still seems kinda messed up to me. I can see the need to exterminate dangerous insects but
'Drowned in molten metal' seems kinda inhumane.

Making a model doing seems even more fucked up. "Check out this monument to cruelty! Paid the guy
who did it a hundred bucks!"

Sure they're not sentient but I wouldn't say a house that backed onto a slaughterhouse had a
scenic view either. If someone I knew bought one of these it'd throw up a pretty big red flag
about them as a person: Either this really doesn't bother them at all or they just don't think
about about it, which might actually be worse.

How is it cruel? Normal methods of extermination involve poison, usually resulting in long,
drawn-out deaths that take minutes to hours. Death via molten metal at the longest is seconds,
usually absolutely instant. Much faster, far less 'pain', even if you believe ants can feel pain
  (which science says they can't).

>> [_] Anonymous 02/18/14(Tue)04:10 No.2292998

  >>2292995
because the mad person in question is capable of killing ants with poison, so to him it's huimane.
the mad person doesn't really get how the aluminum bit works, so because it's not easily feasable
and not readliy understood on how to recreate, and possibly dangerous, the mad person says it's
  inhumane

but he could poison the ants and cause a longer suffering death

>> [_] Anonymous 02/18/14(Tue)04:14 No.2293004

  >>2292998

Not even that hard to pull this off. You can use what amounts to a steel trash bin and a bit of
high-temp clay and a bag of charcoal to make a furnace that can melt aluminum. Cans work well for
the situation, say 20 bucks in 12 packs of coke and empty out the cans, or just stash your
  empties for this.

The hard bit is safely handling the molten aluminum for pouring. Even that wouldn't be insanely
  hard.

  DROWNED in molten metal? lol
That would vaporize the ants before they even had a chance to breathe it in. It is the most
humane way to exterminate an ant colony by far. Literally no suffering, there is no time to.

>> [_] Anonymous 02/18/14(Tue)05:41 No.2293052

I was sorta impressed when I saw those five or so ants manage to get the fuck out of the colony
through the sides. Survival of the fittest, right there.

Ur dumb, just so you know.

Using your magical glass logic, tell me how much boiling water you would take with you into the
woods to fill a cup under the ground that is a completely unknown size, cause you know, its under
the fucking ground, not a clear drinking glass. Remember if your boiling water cools you'll have
to go back home for more and there's a good chance the "glass" will have deteriorated by the time
  you get back.

Anyway, got way off topic there, to answer the actual quesion of

The answer is probably just from experience, and bringing more than you think youll need. Im sure

>> [_] Anonymous 02/18/14(Tue)08:00 No.2293115

The colony doesn't look very active. It's probably abandoned and those ants you see on the
surface are just random ants wandering across the abandoned colony.

>> [_] Anonymous 02/18/14(Tue)08:45 No.2293137

  >>2293064

Failed logic. You can bring far, far more solid metal than you need and then just melt more. It
takes roughly 10-15 minutes to melt some more metal in the furnace they built on-site, so if it
doesn't fill on the first attempt just melt another load.

>> [_] Anonymous 02/18/14(Tue)09:14 No.2293146

Anything that has nerves can feel pain, even ants. If they didn't have a pain reflex they
wouldn't be able to recognize when they're being attacked. Only creatures with developmental
disabilities that cause them to be unable to react to the hormones released by damaged nerves are
unable to feel pain, and those are rare in nature, because the inability to recognize an attack
  is strongly selected against.

>> [_] Anonymous 02/18/14(Tue)09:19 No.2293148

  >>2293146

Ability to react to damage is not the same thing as 'pain'. Ants have no concept of time, no
higher level function of any sort. An ant cannot 'fear', nor can it understand what is happening
to it. It's reaction to pain is more on the line of your knee jerking when the doc tests your
reflexes, an automatic, unthinking, scripted reaction.

On top of that, this doesn't even leave them time to 'feel' that much. Thermal shock is far more
lethal to smaller creatures (large surface area means faster heat absorption to critical organs),
so the extreme temperature would literally fry them alive inside of half a second, the entire
HIVE was likely dead in the first 10 seconds, with no single ant being alive longer than 2
seconds from when the heat hit it.
