Yes and no. This is an anime exclusive arc where most of the captains have evil dopplegangers.

I don't know how far you've gotten in Bleach but some of the Captains have died in the Thousand
Year Blood War arc, this takes place after Aizen's defeat.

I immediately dropped the series once Ichigo rescued Rukia and the guy with the eyepatch and bells
in his hair woke up as if Ichigo didn't kill him. I knew then that it would be just another
bullshit series.
Turns out I was right. People loses battles left and right but still surviving and people keep
getting stronger and stronger, fighting again and again just to reveal that AHAH I HAD ANOTHER
SECRET MOVE (that I didn't use against you in my previous fight and then lost against you but
whatever). These series where they keep pulling shit out of their ass and keep going back and forth
concerning who is stronger than whom is crap in my eyes. Imagine how strong Ichigo is now compared
to in the beginning of the series? Well in the beginning he kicked the ass of guy with the
eyepatch, plus many more. But then the author ressurected him and revealed that HOHO HE WASNT USING
EVEN 1% OF HIS TRUE POWER. Bah. I know some people might think that pulling new secret moves out
again and again is fun but... no. Not to mention how embarrasing Bleach got sometimes with strange
jokes and strange animation that I don't think belonged in the otherwise overall atmosphere of the
series. I could ignore
that but when I realized the author just made shit up as he went along and never planned ahead I
gave up on the series.
Sorry for my rant but it pisses me off a bit when anime series does this stuff.

You aren't completely wrong, but there are really far worse shows. Bleach is at least more
consistend than any Dragonball series followed by a letter and most other shows trying to copy the
'dragonball'-concept. They all might get stronger over time but never would one destroy the
universe by sneezing. Also instead of Krillin dying on a regular basis to implement the so called
Worf-effect Ichigo is the one getting a beating once in a while. It's still stupid but at least
they make the resulting struggle part of his character rather than making, like you said it, shit
up as they go along.
The best example is Ichigos inner hollow. It makes a damn lot more sense than freaking super
sayians and most of it's variants in other shows.
