The Japanese have flat and often only semi-rich lands but managed to make due with improvisations
in rice cultivation.
Arabians/Egyptians/Jews also managed to make great strides in agriculture by settling near areas
abundant with water or where climates were less intense. This is probably one of the more extreme
cases and is a good example of making due with what you have.
Ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures actually lived in very fertile lands, usually near the South of
Mexico where Jungles were abundant. Still, even in Northern arid regions they still managed to
venture out and survive.
The Norse are just naturally badass so there's being born with the right genetics as well, I
suppose.

The Southern US was extremely fertile compared to the Northern US.
The difference is that focusing on trade, militarization, and industrialization makes you a much
more formidable civilization than an agrarian one, when you have widespread faster-than-foot
transport.
After the industrial revolution, this became much more lopsided- and during the industrial
revolution, Europeans were in Africa lopping hands off, so, y'know.

Guys, jungles are not fertile. The only thing that makes the jungle fertile is the litter
constantly being refreshed by the giant trees. Take those trees away, the nutrients wash away and
you are left with useless land.
