I have to wonder at that point at the end of the movie, if Bateman was starting to question his
sanity. What I got from American Psycho was that Bateman wasn't so much a psychopath as he was
drug-induced psychotic a it's extremely doubtful that he killed anyone, instead just imagining he
did and took it as memory. Things like running through his apartment building with a throttling
chainsaw chasing after that hooker.; there's no way in hell that kind of noise would go unnoticed
by the other tenants.. That's not even mentioning the multiple victims bodies that apparently
never existed.
If the story had any message at all it may be that drugs will fuck with your head, I dunno.

If you read the book it's pretty obvious that he's actually a murderer. The chainsaw scene wasn't
originally in it, instead he tortured the hooker in his room for a while until she died.
And the victim's bodies did exist, it's just that the real estate agent that found them covered
it up so she would be able to sell the apartment easier. The whole book is about how apathetic
people are and how this consumerist society places more value on how people appear than anything
else ("but on the inside doesn't matter").
Also the reason why Bateman's lawyer says that he had lunch with Paul Owen a few days ago is
because people are always mistaking each other, everyone looks the same and most people don't
even notice if someone disappears.
