The racist tree did not evolve socially, it just made the pact to appear not to be racist so that
it wouldn't be ostracized. That's the joke-ish message at the end: that racists are still being
racists, just that they are socially forced to leave their ideologies. But not inside. So social
progress is not really something you force. It is something people grow to learn and understand
  in time.

There is a difference, albeit minor, between stereotypes and racism.

Picturing a black person as a basketball player rather than someone of your own race isn't racist
unless it comes with a negative connotation associated with it. There are a lot of famous black
basketball players and as such that's going to be the public image of the sport for a lot of
  people.

Contrary to popular belief, many people actually care about other people even though there is no
immediate personal gain to be had; they're usually known as "friends", but friendly feelings can
be expressed even without non-personal relationships. the children evidently considered sam a
friend because they brought him to the tree that they loved so much and wanted him to have one of
  the apples that they enjoy.

Because the racist tree didn't want to provide an apple, the children felt that, even though
there's no direct effect toward them, they care about their friend enough to be willing to
support him by treating themselves as equals to him and not taking an apple.

Bullshit. Racism is prejudice and stereotyping on the basis of race. Nothing more and nothing
less. Even "Postive Discrimination" is still a form of racism.

The difference between Stereotyping and Racism is that Stereotyping is a broader term, while also
involving a specific form of prejudice. Racism only deals with race. You can stereotype someone
by gender or age or intelligence, but racism requires it to be about race.

You are sounding like those individuals that think that only Whites (and trees) can be Racist.

"Prejudice" is what I mean by a negative connotation, in the sense that it's usually a negative
association of traits assumed about someone based on the color of their skin. Affirmative action
does go too far in addressing issues related to hiring and skin color, which is why now it has to
be proven that there is a specific instance of discrimination being addressed along with a
specific response, rather than a vague "hire more minorities" agenda.

There is nothing inherently prejudiced about a mental picture of a certain race associated with a
certain job when those things are associated often enough in real life. Basketball stars with the
most media exposure tend to be black. It's not surprising that this shapes our immediate mental
  image of a basketball player.

Which is nonsense denotatively. Prejudice is just a tool, and an extremely useful one. People are
prejudice against bears and felons and dogs that foam from the mouth. A world without prejudice
would be a very short lived one.

There IS something inherently prejudiced about a mental picture of a certain race associated with

This is equivocating on what prejudice means. It's reasonable to have a prejudice against a
foaming dog or a bear because those specific visual traits - the foam, and being a bear - are
actually associated with specific behaviors and threats. The association between a profession and
a skin color isn't an inherently negative association, like that one is.

If I'm told to picture a car and I picture a blue one rather than a red one, this could be
because I own a blue car, or because all my neighbors own blue cars, or my favorite car is blue.
It doesn't mean I hate red cars or that I think cars can't be red, or that I think being blue
makes a car intrinsically better in any respect when it comes to driving.

  The point is that it is still prejudice. A bear being a bear isn't inherently negative either;
perhaps it is a teddy bear?

If you naturally think of something as something that it does not necessarily need to be, that is
prejudice on your part. If that something you think involves the basis of race, it is Racist too.
Doesn't matter whether what you think is good, bad or neutral.

This is only racist when it influences our actions rather than our initial impressions, like
black people being overly targeted for stop and risk in new york... which then leads to more
people associating black people with criminal activity because they get stopped by the police
  more often.

It's not racist until it goes both ways, assuming that not only would most "criminals" would be
blacks, but that most blacks would be "criminals."

No, but it instantly shows that you have prejudice on the basis of race.
You say you believe racism comes later, but it really doesn't.

What you want is for racism to be inherently bad, rather than just a thing, and at the same time
you don't want yourself to be guilty of something you view as inherently bad in all forms. So you
distance it from yourself by claiming that your racism isn't REALLY racism, making excuses and

It's not racist to say that most people who get targeted by stop and frisk are black, because
  that's actually true in reality.

If I'm told to picture someone with sickle cell anemia and I picture a black person, this isn't
racist because it's a disease that affects a vastly greater number of black people than of other
skin colors, and is famous for doing so.

If the impressions we have and the way we visualize things are based on empirical evidence, and
skin color is actually a relevant trait, it's not racist.

The trouble with the criminal association is that a police force that is biased against black
people creates the impression of empirical evidence that black people commit more crimes, when in
truth there will be more innocent people getting frisked for no reason, and criminals of other
skin colors getting away with whatever it is they're doing.

This is true, but it's trivial. I'm making no judgment as to whether a black basketball player is
better than an asian one, just like if I picture a blue car when I hear the word "car" I am not
making a judgment of it being a better vehicle than a red one, because I understand that the skin
color - or paint color - is not a relevant quality in judging that. If I picture an asian
basketball player initially and someone has to specify that that a player is black, that's still
not racist, for the same reasons.

  >>2574550

Because I have full knowledge required to make an initial observation after seeing something in
reality. It isn't until later, when one forms an opinion without full knowledge and then acts on
that opinion (still without full knowledge) that there is racism.

If I'm told to picture a basketball player, that can include basketball players I have seen.

The group of basketball players I have seen is a subset of the group of all basketball players
that exist. The initial criteria for what I am picturing do not exclude picturing things I have
seen in reality. Picturing things that exist in reality is generally advisable to do, when
  possible and applicable.

The projections you've made after that faulty statement don't follow.

The thing is, we mentally represent things as categories, not images. That initial impression is
a conglomerate of all basketball players you have ever seen, molded and mashed into a homogeneous

  I'm afraid you are mistaken.

But when forming that abstraction we don't weigh every example of something we've seen in a set

If I'm picturing a car it's more likely to look like my car, even if my car happens to be blue
and most other cars I see are red.
