Tried playing the original on an emulator a few years back (first FF I played in the series was FF9) but the loading times and camera delays on every single battle were unbearable. I've watched a 100% playthrough of the game on YouTube though and can see that the hype is actually coming from somewhere worthwhile in FF7. If they don't manage this remake very carefully in being true to the original and checking if the changes they make are OK with most of the fans they will receive an enormous backlash and have their reputation as a game company damaged. If you haven't checked out FF12 I recommend you do so, it's my favorite in the series out of the ones I've played: 9, 10, 10-2, 12, 13 (tried FF6 on emulator once but can't remember anything, probably just played 30 min). The world and characters are fantastic and I really liked the combat system. FF10 and FF12 are almost on the same place on my list but 12 wins just because it's more fun to play and replay. Those cities feel so large and alive.
