It's one of those bosses that requires a key item to defeat. You have to find the relic back in

Incorrect, Anon.
The Key Item makes the fight considerably easier (think: the key items in the gauntlet series),
but the boss can be beat without it.
It requires timing, but you have to hit them while they expose themselves trying to hit you.
