Every industrial effort first went to the army, and every social sentiment first went to national security. The mistake is assuming that this is all an inherent byproduct of Communism itself - Funding social programs at the expense of the ultra-wealthy doesn't automatically lead to mass killings, as Europe and Canada can demonstrate.

Who actually gets killed depends on what decisions are made and the deaths reported depends on how power over people is done. The history in textbooks could very well be true, falsified, or mixed with truth and lies but don't let what you're taught in books be the all-conclusive facts for you just because everyone accepts them. Find out for yourself the truth if you have the means. There is no such thing as "a book cannot lie" even textbooks.
