  That test was done in 1955. A decade after the US nuked Japan and saw first hand how radiation
  affected people. They knew the effects of radiation poisoning, but they still marched the troops
  right through the bomb site. I'm pretty sure the ones you can actually find any record of didn't
  die right away, however the sheep nearby did. And by the 1960s most of the farmers near there
  that owned the sheep and tried to sue the government for their deaths had cancer about as bad as
  the soldiers.

  Even to this day that blast still kills people in the form of mostly thyroid cancer in the
  midwest.
