how do you effectively manually convert a long-ish video (~5 minutes) into a swf? I tried doing
it the straightforward way (convert to .fla --> drop into flash --> choose "embed inside swf
file" option), but the audio kept going out of sync and the file size ballooned to a huge size
(about 5 times bigger than when I used an online converter).

Use Media Encoder to convert it to FLV and fiddle with the settings (bitrate etc) to get the
desired file size, then drop it into Flash and embed the file into the swf. You could also
convert it from mp4 to swf with a tool like Format Factory and fiddle with the settings there.
Just please do not flood with popular Youtube shit.
