Both of theses sports are equally cringeworthy to watch from an outsiders perspective.

Funny thing is the term "soccer" actually comes from 19th century England as the need to
differentiate football and rugby (both called football at the time) arose. Soccer was deemed an
abbreviation of "association football" while rugby was shortened to just "rugger".
American football was created in 1869, likely during the period when soccer was still a popular
term. It remained colloquially for the U.S. sport, while over time European and South American
fans and associations readopted the name "football".

The origin doesn't matter, the real issue is that US refuses to call the sport what the rest of
the world is calling it and they name their new sport the name of an already existing sport
instead of naming it more logically ("handegg" actually makes sense)

Well, on the upside, if we keep spreading this word, and use it unironically, and IRL then it'll
catch on eventually

Well why is hockey called hockey? I mean, there is no pawning or selling of goods involved, so
shouldn't it be called "smackey" or "stickey"? God, Canadians are so fucking dumb sometimes.

Hockey is a word barely ever used for anything but the sport
majority of people don't even know it means anything other than that
however, everyone knows what both "foot" and "ball" means

That's pretty ignorant of you but that's fine i'll make another
If there was no other game called "football" people wouldn't care so much, sure some would say
there's not enough usage of the foot in this game, and bla blah
but the majority of people dislike handegg being called football because there already is another
game called that
one that is more foot and more ball
American football is closer to a variation of Rugby

I heard from somebody else that this is indeed true, but there's an extra layer involved.
Supposedly there was a large amount of class stratification in UK at the time, and in the first
instances of tv, and the lower class had its own words for certain things (called it football)
while the upper class insisted on certain terms (soccer), and especially if you managed to get
interviewed to be on tv it was a big no-no to not talk like an upperclassman. If not you'd just
not be aired or something.
In the end the lower class saw "soccer" as an oppressive term used by a coddling class of elitist
they didn't want to have anything to do with.
Their children picked up that you're supposed to get buttflustered if they called it soccer but I
doubt they picked up why.

well from dictionary.com:
hockey
noun
Feces; excrement; shit: Great big blooping hunks of dog hockey/ But it's a lot of horse hockey,
on both sides
Empty and pretentious nonsense; bullshit: any of that hocky about being a white man
Semen; cum
[1923+; origin unknown; perhaps fr a variant pronunciation of the hokum, hokey, hocus-pocus
cluster, suggested by some spellings, and hence originally ''falsehood, pretentious exaggeration,
etc,'' whence ''bullshit,'' whence ''shit'';]

This is so dumb. Soccer, American football, Rugby, Gridiron, etc all come from the same sport
which was called football. It was called football because it was played on foot rather than
horses (like polo).
Also balls don't have to be round.
>a solid or hollow sphere or ovoid, especially one that is kicked, thrown, or hit in a game.
Ovoid means egg shaped. Or in other words, the shape of an american football.

Reminder that the average American Football game takes over 3 hours, but there's only 11 minutes
of total action in the entire game.
The rest of the time is replays, shots of players standing around, and commercials.
