A double jump in action games is the same as the grossly oversimplified driving of just about any popular driving game. The act of 'throwing' someone upwards whilst midair yourself is an attempt on the game creators part of making cloud's ridiculous ascent feel more realisitc whilst being somehow meaningful for the characters that support cloud throughout the game. Unfortunately, it's this type of bullshit that the brain simply can't accept. It's just the right amount of bullshit to forever remain in the realm of bullshit. Back to the analogy of a driving game, it's like if your car somehow flipped over and you were still able to accelerate and maneuver as if your car was still right side up. Shit just doesn't work that way.
