I personally think so
not because it is better per se but because I think that a lot of people wont bother learning
flash in the future seeing as how it no longer is useful for regular websites that require
smartphone compability

How difficult would it be to make a program that converts HTML5 to Flash? This is coming from
someone who knows nothing about either format

It doesn't matter which one is better, if the fact is that HTML5 will replace flash, we really
should be able to convert.

Well not really. Their only real common feature is that they show up as pixels on a screen. Even
then it would be exceedingly difficult to do certain flash things with html without cheating and
using a Canvas element. They arent even the same kind of thing, HTML is typesetting adapted into
the internet, and flash is an animation platform.
You could convert from one to the other, but not without cheating or greatly misleading people
with what you mean by 'converting'.

Javascript is to HTML5 as ActionScript is to Flash. Flash and HTML5 on their own are almost
entirely the same. They both provide facilities for drawing primitives to a screen and are
complemented by a virtual machine to run scripts and events. What makes the key difference is
only a matter of commercial support.
Flash CS6, for example, is just a fancy WYSIWYG that allows animators to do less programming and
work with a medium they are comfortable in. Until recently, HTML5+Javascript didn't have that.
Since Flash now has an HTML5 export option for practical applications and video output for
animations the flash format has become fairly unimportant.
>Using canvas is cheating
No, that is there to compete with the likes of Flash. Same with WebGL.
