Somewhere out there, someone thinks this looks good.

There were plenty of trash anime shows in the 2000's, 90's and 80's, production companies have
just gotten better at merchandising and demographic targeting. A one season ecchi/kawaii anime
will often pay for itself.

Yeah, it'll pay for itself, but not much else.
There are too many mediocre anime and though they did exist as well back in the earlier years of
anime, nowadays they're all too common. Almost every knew title is some moe-shit or pandering
garbage. There a a few that are okay, but rarely anything that raises the bar.
Why is everyone okay with mediocre work that only does well enough to pay expenses or depends on
fansevice as plot?

The improvement of the anime industry is perceptible not in progress, but in result. Just like
any business, there are standstill periods. We are in the Windows Vista era of anime.

*sigh*
Why can't we have something awesome like GITS or Trigun again? Something that everyone loves but
isn't shit like Naruto or Attack on Titan.

Cool fact 4chan! All of those were boys!

I don't know, ask the circle jerkers on 4chan that and you'll likely get the expected mediocre
response.
Modern anime:
>Kawaii everything
>Fan Service
>Throwing away realism completely for the sake of a shitty joke or fan service
>heroines, heroines everywhere
>And they all have to wear school girl uniforms too
>and they all have to be 18 or younger
>Nonexistant plots
>Tropes, tropes everywhere
>Running jokes
>"feel-jerker" moments between characters are often derived from feelings being minorly hurt and
then resolved in an open hearted way, like you might see in a PBS children's show. Or from latent
romantic feelings that have built up prior in order to spring in instant romantic relationship
>all main characters must have exotic, colorful hair and clothes(unless wearing school uniform
24/7)
>If fantasy, must have uber powered character progression over short periods of time for no
reason- or main character is useless
All I can think of at the moment

Also, those things sell like shit in Japan.
The current anime industry has been built up around catering to Otaku and selling small numbers
of merch at high prices. Now Otaku aren't spending anywhere near as much as they use to so
studios are having to figure out where to go from here.
They've got money tied up in shows for a bit longer, but hopefully by winter season or spring
next year we can see some new types of shows.

That seamless loop, though.
