  It used to not show crappy/offtopic threads on the first page and let them 404 faster. Also there
  used to be something like "polite sage" on slower boards in case you were discussing something
  unrelated. Sagebombing could be considered an attempt to fill a thread's post limit but it wasn't
  really working. Now people do not realize they can do it and as an effect bigger boards tend to
  be filled with offtopic.
  Not really useful on /f/ today. It just bumps threads to top of the page, but if you come to /f/
  you are propably looking through every swf anyway.
