fun fact:
This clip is a wonderful example of diegetic and non-diegetic music. In the beginning, the music
is in the characters universe, and we are shown this through the shot with the phonograph, as
well as the volume ducking when we're shown shots of the hallway, seeing as the sound source is
in a different room.
When the fight breaks out, we get a subtle transition to non-diagetic music, or in other words,
music that only the audience can hear. The gunfire covers up the fact that Danny Boy is remaining
the same volume even though the racket caused by the guns would realistically cover it up. By the
time our main character is out on the roof and the street, he would no longer be able to hear the
music, and as such the music becomes non-diagetic and stands as the soundtrack for the scene.
There's also some really cool editing going on as well. At first, the scenes cut when a musical
phrase (a verse of the song) ends. But as the tension mounts, the cuts get faster, but never cut
partway through a word, it's always on a consonant or end of a musical phrase. We then have our
MC stamp out his cigar on the word "so", emphasizing the next shot which is when the music swells
and the duo burst through the door. That's why the pacing feels so good.
