The fact that society isn't more bothered by prison rape is pretty sad especially given all the
imaginary and irrelevant things they give so much attention to.

I mean I am not sure I know of a system where we could actually rid ourselves of prisons but at
the very least we should be able to design them so people can't get hurt or raped in them.

Realistically speaking, why should someone? Depending on the prison, that man could have
murdered. Why help him any more than we should besides give them food, a bed, and a roof; Despite
that, people still want to give them more.

You're paying so a man doesn't have to worry about paying for it himself.

Because prison is already a harsh punishment.
Infact I would say extended periods of forced isolation in a box is cruel an unusual punishment
and if an alternative system could be found that would be good.

Also why put up the false pretense of caring about their safety if you're not willing to actually
  keep them safe?
Either care and spend a few extra dollars so prisoners can be kept safe or just put a giant fence
around some island, put all prisoners on it and dump food by helicopter.
Care or don't but don't pretend to care but not really effectively stop it.

I know what you mean. Prison doesn't seem to be about rehabilitation at all anymore, though that
was the original idea behind it.
It is unfortunate that there are so many inmates who essentially cheat the system by taking
advantage of their time in prison to continue abusing their fellow man instead of repenting for
  their misdeeds.

Though I suppose there are only a few types of people that end up in prison (ignoring the
  occasional falsely accused):
those that sinned and are not penitent
and those that sinned and are penitent
in these cases, you wonder if someone who so utterly lacks any sign of remorse or empathy can be
  rehabilitated
and if someone who is penitent would even commit a crime in the first place if they were capable
  of such remorse.
Are they truly filled with regret, or are they actually the the former category, but sly enough
to say whatever it takes to evade consequences?

Can a criminal's debt ever truly be paid in one's life?
When they do their service, but do not feel regret from their actions, does their service mean
  anything for their soul?
Does repenting out of obligation actually accomplish anything if you do not settle things
  mentally or spiritually?

How can we make sure that the years of prison time are not without spiritual value for these
  people?
I do not think that prison in its current state is the answer, but I do not know what we can do
to help these people who commit crimes.
