>> Lithier 27309 Please don't distribute the cheat-enabled version of my game. I use things like this to incentivize people to donate, even if it's just a small amount. I do try to get my game into as many people's hands as possible, but honestly, if you're playing for the first time with the cheats on it kind of spoils the experience anyway. You can always get the most recent public version here: http://mvolith.blogspot.com/p/play-game. html Please support the game if you like it, and encourage others to do the same, or at least refrain from discouraging them. Thank you!
>> Anon 27313 >># Obligatory - yet sincere - thanks.
>> Anon 27318 >># >># Not being able to complete the game without cheats (achievements) makes it pretty hard to justify skipping on the cheat vers.
>> Anon 27320 >># >Please don't distribute the cheat-enabled version of my game. >refrain from discouraging. Devs like you hurt yourself more by trying to micromanage the internet. If it's online it's free, period. By actively trying to command people you just create more incentive to rip you off... Remember SPORE?
>> Anon 27321 >># Did you ever add the female portion, or is it still all male? I heard it was good but I don't find the idea of fondling a wolf's penor and balls to get him to like me very appealing
>> Lithier 27325 >># Not sure what you're talking about, as achievements are enabled in the regular version, but disabled in the cheat version. You can still complete the game in the cheat version, but the flow is better regulated by the point and achievement system of the regular game. Either version can be played to "completion" as far as the game is written so far. >># I'm not trying to create a paywall, I'm not doing DRM, and I'm not making any demands. I am asking sincerely that people don't distribute the versions made specifically for supporters. MVOL+ doesn't hide half the game away, it just adds a few nice little bonuses. You can still play the entire game just fine with the public version. Hell, you'll have a better experience with the public version if it's your first time. Giving out the cheat version takes away the incentive for donators, which hurts me, and it diminishes the experience for people that are trying the game for the first time, which hurts everyone. >># Yes, actually, with v0.20 the full-female Lith has gone public! There are still a few scenes that aren't supported yet, but the bulk of the game can now be played with just about any configuration of gender and sex.
>> Anon 27326 >># Cool game, cool developer. Keep up the good work.
>> Anon 28338 >># I was just trying to tell you that all you're doing is getting the attention of all the people who are now gonna distribute it with the sole purpose of pissing you off. Even I was tempted out of old habit to make sure everyone would get this version after skimming your post. >the incentive for donators See this HipsterWelfare(TM) definition of "Donation" irritates me. It's NOT a donation if you do it to get something in return, in this case a different version of the game, that's just called a trade. (or a sponsorship under some circumstances) But yeah, whatever...
>> Anon 28347 >># >It's NOT a donation if you do it to get something in return, in this case a different version of the game, that's just >called a trade. You sir. I like your point and I agree with it.
>> Anon 28349 Cant get all the achievements in a single playthrough. Achievements reset on NG.
>> Horsie 28352 >># Yay! another semantics flame war! "Donation" vs "Trade" is the new "reverse rape" vs "rape" I love the Internet.
>> Anon 28357 >># Shaddup you. This ain't semantics - there's a difference between donating and buying. That's what's concerning us here. Puttin' it in another way, if a free-to-play game puts its funder's names in its credits, that's an incentive to donate. But if it increased their level cap, gave 'em better weapons, or gave 'em any sort of advantage over non-donators, then that ain't a donation anymore - it's a purchase. Go outside and play while the adults talk.
>> Anon 28358 My little lilith linked to malware, viruses and a botnet. What a shock! The furfag is a sociopath!
>> Horsie 28360 >># Yay! I'm going outside! fun times!
>> Anon 28430 >># fukken this How many people do you estimate "donate" to things on Patreon just for the incentives and not to support a content creator? If the incentives magically vanished one day, how many people would stop "donating?"
>> Lithier 28435 >># There are two types of achievements. Some are attached to a save file and will be lost when you start a new game, because they mark milestones and give you points. The others are attached to your main play file, and will persist if you start a new game, as they are there to mark big achievements like finding every scene in the game or finding a particular ending. >># >># I'm fairly certain you're just trying to frame malicious actions as activism, but if you want to talk about this, sure. Offering rewards and tokens of recognition for donations is not a new practice. Donate to a charity, get a tote bag. Donate more, get a plaque. Donate a ton to a university, get a building named after you. Nobody is claiming you're doing this to buy a plaque, you can order one for yourself quite easily. The point is that you like what this organization does and you want to support them, but you also feel like you want some kind of recognition for doing so. It's easier to justify donating if you get SOMEthing in return, even if it's something small, because that makes that small thing meaningful. If I was offering a "free" story commission to every supporter over $X, then yes, that would be a straight up purchase. Commissions have a particular, sometimes significant monetary value. If I locked half the game behind a "premium" version and only gave it out to people that donated over $X, then yes, that would be a paywall, and it would make the base game everyone could play a demo. But that's not what I'm doing. The content that I offer as rewards for donators is a series of small bonuses that are targeted specifically at people that already love the game. The cheat version assumes you've already played the game several times through and just want an easier way to find particular scenes you liked before, or try them out in new ways. One of the highest rewards is literally a copy of the game with your name on it, very much in the same spirit of a plaque, as mentioned above. The difference is about the nature of the content, and about the intentions behind it. The cheat version of the game is not a product that is so much better than the original it obviously has a greater financial value as a product. To a new player, it is WORSE than playing a normal copy of the game. The only additional content it offers is a small preview of upcoming content, which will be public in the near future. These are things which might be considered "priceless" to a dedicated fan, and a worthy token to receive after donating to a cause they deeply enjoy, but I could not in good conscience "sell" the cheat version alongside the regular version. It does not have any significant monetary value. It's not "MVOL, but better." It is a peripheral for a particular set of people. It is a symbol of my thanks to people that have supported the game. It has inherent meaning. It literally says thank you for donating on the front page. If it has any value, like the tote bag or the plaque, it is in the fact that it is a unique, authentic artifact of a good deed that the donator has done. They cannot get this particular product just anywhere, and only people that donated can get it. That is its entire value. So when you distribute this item, not only are you discouraging interested people from donating and ruining the game for new players, but you're insulting the people that are good enough to donate to something they believe in, and devaluing --not in money, but in meaning-- the badge of accomplishment they have received for doing one small, good deed. I know that life can be painful sometimes, but there are people out there that still believe in being kind and doing things because they think that it is right and good. They will pay money purely to show their appreciation for quality and artistic accomplishment. This creates an economy not of money, but of goodwill. I won't say that I'm not sore about the money I may be losing by seeing this version of the game in free distribution, but the insult is greater than the injury. I am not and have no intention of ever trying to "stop" you or "command" you. I am telling you that what you are doing hurts me, and it hurts the people that enjoy this game, and I am asking you to stop. Now. Did anyone bother to actually read this, or are we just invoking the joys of anarchy because we want to paint ourselves as heroic pirates, liberating jewels from the corrupt and wealthy? I can promise you, I'm not getting rich off this anytime soon.
>> Anon 28436 >># I'm sympathetic to you, but I just want to let you know that people are now going to attack you just for writing a wall of text. People here are closet autistic.
>> Anon 28442 >># >closet people here are replying to a porn thread of a furry game, like 85% chance they actually are autistic
>> Anon 28449 >># >I'm fairly certain you're just trying to frame malicious actions as activism. Thanks... In that case I'm fairly certain that no matter what I reply, you're still gonna claim it's "Donations" If you get something in return it's not a donation. Anonymously give 200$ to the homeless starving elderly children who're struggling with obesity via phone and hang up before they can say "Thank you for your donation" that's a donation. If you take the time to give your Name, Address and send them a photo so they can make you a plaque and a bust, you're just buying an ego boost package. Do you "Donate" to a prostitute? After all, she doesn't give you anything but her thanks right? Also just to make it perfectly clear, I'm not a wanna-be Robin Hood and have no problem with you making money. I just do not agree with your definition of Donation, and I got pissed that you introduced yourself to this thread by pulling the "I'm the Author, now I'll tell you what..." act that so many delusional assholes have done before. Have you ever read some of the manic ramblings your paranoid dev colleagues add on their sites and to their preloaders?
>> Lithier 28453 >># If you want to frame giving money to a good cause and wanting to feel good about it as "buying an ego boost," then fine, it's an emotional transaction. A purchase of good feelings, rather than material goods. It doesn't sound like we're gonna see eye to eye about the nature of donations, but that wasn't really what I took issue with. It sounded, to me, like you and folks agreeing with you were implying it was morally sanctionable to rip off and distribute this file because I was the same as some publisher like EA, putting all the good stuff behind a paywall and always finding new, often destructive ways to extort the people interested in my work or something. If you're talking about indie devs flipping their lids, I think I've seen a little of it. I know I've seen some things about artists going bonkers about their work showing up anywhere they don't specifically want it. But it sounds like you, at least, don't feel that I've actually brought anything too objectionable to this thread after all? I don't expect my actions here to right out stop my supporter content from being distributed, but I wanted to at least try to make people aware of the damage they're doing, and for little gain. I only even saw this page because I was about to post the regular game to this site, but I assumed that with this copy sitting here, it would either be ignored or maybe even attacked as redundant/competing :/
>> Anon 28455 >># It's obvious you are not going to accept our point that these aren't 'donations'. That's fine - do whatever you wish. But don't expect us to inconvenience ourselves on your behalf (including respecting your requests). After all, we can do as we wish, as well. You have all the power here. All we can do is react.
>> Lithier 28460 >># I disagree on a basic level with the claim, and as is usually the case with any argument, people will not radically change their basic beliefs just because someone else asked them to. This goes both ways. I appreciate that you've discussed this with me in a civil and constructive manner, though. I honestly hadn't expected this friendly of a response. As for power, I'm not sure what you're referring to. The option to request a takedown? I don't intend to do so any time soon. It won't accomplish anything except antagonizing people that seem to get excited by this sort of thing. I just ask that people think twice about posting the donator content, because there's more to consider than "yay free premium content for my buddies" and "lol fuck that guy for trying to make money off art." I've been making it a habit to post the new versions of the game on various sites like this with every other big update, one week after the main release, so that I have time to shake out any bugs that come up before posting the "final final" version here for you guys to enjoy. If you guys want the game posted with every update, or at the same time as the main release, I'll be happy to oblige. I do like to get my game out there and in people's hands, just... not this version. Thanks again, for taking the time to really talk with me.
