  shockwave was the company that originally created flash before it was bought out by adobe
  it's still called "shockwave" flash sometimes, because the file extension .swf stand for
  shockwave flash.
  but it's actually just adobe flash now
  and you need the adobe flash player, generally distributed as the plugin for the browser of your
  choice (there's a standalone .exe too though)

  this is wrong. macromedia was the company making flash.

  they developed an entirely different thing called "shockwave", which existed before flash.

  actually flash started out named "future splash" and was made by a company named futurewave. they
  developed "future splash" to compete with the already-existing "shockwave".

  macromedia eventually bought futurewave in december 1996, killed the company and renamed "future
  splash" to "flash" (f from future and lash from splash).

  then they developed both flash and shockwave along side each other. eventually flash won over the
  much more demanding shockwave plugin and macromedia abandoned it to focus only on flash.

  adobe bought and killed macromedia in december 2005 and has continued to develop flash ever since.

  however after releasing Flash Pro CS6 in 2012 they must have realized there's not enough money in
  flash because they've almost stopped developing the format since then

  and here we are in 2017 where google has decided to try and kill flash once and for all because
  they don't own it.

  flash lives on as an export option in Adobe Animate but due to google's refusal to let swf files
  onto youtube (they could easily strip harmful actionscript if they wanted to) most people just
  export their vector animations to video files that are several GiB in size instead of also
  releasing the same thing in swf format, which has better quality in just a couple of MiB. the end!

  This is the part that fucking depresses me the most about all this.
  Since flash dying, there is no decent single file vector format that is allowed on any sites.

  Shits not even remotely a good replacement for SWF files. Not in the slightest. Half the shit
  Flash does, HTML5 cannot do, or does it extremely poorly.
  Video acceleration a good example, holy fucking inconsistent support Batman, there's brand new
  machines that run shit slower than machines from 2010, and vice versa, and in-between.
  EVERYWHERE, hardly any decent support for hardware acceleration.

  People whining about security can get fucked. Never had a single issue with Flash since early
  2000s. Not once.
  Retards get viruses. Also not had one of those on a single computer since the 90s.
  Only one I have technically had was 4chan.js to decompile it and see how it worked.

  Pepper API can go fuck itself. Slow piece of shit. The overhead on Pepper is through the ROOF.
  I remember drawing on Drawball one time, update downloaded, restarted Chrome, Drawball became
  impossible to use my scripts on. Drawing at any reasonably high speed instantly disconnected.
  (not to mention lagged the Flash player like ass)
  I tried everything, giving up thinking it was maybe my connection or Drawball shitting itself.
  Nope, turns out it is also slowing down streaming sites too.
  Later realized via tech site that Google slipped in their faggy Pepper API and Pepper Flash.
  Disabled it, problem solved.
  Even today is still blows ass. Not just there, but other collab drawing sites. I'm sure most
  people here have opened the whiteboard.swf before, it is MUCH faster on NPAPI.

  Fuck Pepper. Fuck Google. Fuck HTML5.

  I get java being removed, you can just run that from a separate app and lose nothing, but flash
  has a self contained system for small file size movies and games while integrating with HTML fine
