Tried 8 when it came out, waited patiently for the 8.1 'fix', was shit-
got 10 (although I knew from teth engineering samples it was already horrible)
and wanted to an hero
W10 performs WORSE on every single one of my machines, and was a never ending headache of
workflow interruptions IN SPITE of my crippling the spyshit via Group Policy.
THEN, a fatal HDD error, so BACK TO WIN 7 M8S!!
The last great thing Uncle Bill gave us.
It's all downhill from here.
Also, Linux is for servers and mobile devices.
It will never be a viable PRODUCTIVITY OS, as we know "productivity". There's simply TOO MANY
incompatible flavors ever to get a universalized software base.
Besides, only 10% of productivity-ware runs on it, otherwise, it's WINDOZE< BABY!

first of all if you already have a legal licence for windows 7 then why would you need to buy a
new one? second, can you even buy them anymore? third just pirate it?
i was actually one of those rare fans of microsoft until they released 10. really shifty business
stuff going on right now, they almost makes apple look good

Learn about GPU passthrough.
Run a Linux box as your main OS, then run a Windows 10 virtual machine inside your Linux box.
Best of both worlds, security and flexibility of linux, and all the functionality of Windows.

hopefully by then all games are released for linux as well. it's already getting pretty decent
and many game engines now support exporting to linux directly
im honestly still worried. tried linux (ubuntu) during university and i didnt like it at all.
that was almost 8 years ago tho so much must have happened.
a quick search for "linux most similar to windows" gave me this:
https://itsfoss.com/windows-like-linux-distributions/
looks like there are many alternatives already and although i cant be bothered to choose right
now i know that in 2020 youtube will overflow with videos of people helping out with comparisons
honestly though i think that as long as lots of people still use windows 7 in 2020 microsoft will
actually keep extending their support for the system just to keep people in their echo system.
i'd stay for example, unless they specifically force me to go ill stay on 7.
home computing is actually pretty new so they wouldn't want people to start moving to
alternatives. even if just 10% of the population those 10% will have kids and why would they
install paid OS once they have discovered that free OS is just as good? that mindset could spread.
im a little surprised that microsoft didnt wait at least 1 generation (30 years or so) before
trying to lock people into their system like they are with windows 10. things are still early
enough to change if enough people don't like what MS is doing

however look at all those steps. at my age i just want shit to work, linux gurus have to dedicate
some effort on making stuff easy for the common man to do those things. im talking just as easy
as installing windows, installing a game and double clicking the icon

Both of these, I use debian for everything but newer games and the rare application that I can't
get to work on wine.
>>3254447
The problem with wine is that when it comes to heavy duty graphics software (read vidya) they
stay some eight years behind. Dx11 is just now starting to get supported and although most games
are compatible with dx10 or straight up opengl, dx11 (and soon 12) exclusive games are pretty
common.
And there's specific stuff that still needs work. For example , a while ago I got Dark Souls to
work with dsfix and a bunch of other mods and I could swear it run slightly smoother than it did
on windows, but the 360 controller mapping was completely fucked (pause on r3, item use on left
trigger etc.). I spent hours trying every solution on winehq and random forums but nothing worked
and I couldn't even use a joy2key equivalent because the raw controller input couldn't be blocked
which generated a double input issue whenever a button was pressed. All that said older
applications (including 16 bit) tend to work better than on current windows.

Try anything with kde5/plasma, as far as my usage goes everything is nearly the same as windows
only most the small things windows does wrong they did right. Just be mindful that if you use
linux at one point or another you'll have to learn to use a console. This is the book that I used
back when I started:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxcommand/
It is long but very thorough, clear and even fun to read if you are even slightly interested in
computer science and it's history.
