  VAC stands for Valve Anti-Cheat.
  It's basically an automated system that bans steam accounts from games made by Valve Corp. They
  typically do delayed bans to get maximum penetration into the ranks of cheaters and to give the
  people producing the cheats/hacks a hard time. Then they typically ban all the accounts caught
  cheating in a sort of sweep. This is termed a "VAC wave". This one happened a while ago though, I
  recall this shit being posted on /f/ at least a year or two ago.

  that's not true, it's far more based in ideology or game type than hiding banning methods

  there are 2 ideologies when it comes to banning cheaters, proactive and mass banning.
  proactive will get you banned instantly but a simple forum check will save you from a ban, since
  banned users almost instantly warn others.
  mass banning is usually done every update, so cheaters get caught and banned all at once denying
  them the ability to warn others, but if updates are slow, for instance monthly, far more bother
  to restart with a new account and cheat for another month or longer if the cheat gets changed

  Once your steam account gets "vacced", your inventory gets locked and you can't play on servers
  using VAC, meaning 99.999% of them.
  VAC bans are permanent and non negociable.

  But as the two other posters said, it's a bit weird.
  Sometimes, there are "delayed waves", where VAC gets updated, lists all the cheaters, and bans
  them all at once.
  I would suppose that they vac ban as much account as possible at once in order for the
  developpers not to update the scripts to see where it failed, update it, thus protecting all the
  other users.
