  Going through my flash collection, I came across this again. In 2009, when I was 20 years old, I
  put the barrel of a shotgun in my mouth and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. Of all the
  things going through my mind at the moment, none of it was lead. The most prominent thought was
  the supreme regret of having made an irreversable decision as the hammer struck the firing pin.
  Nothing happened. I spend the rest of the day refreshing this flash after the song ended.

  Three months later, I took that same shell to the range and fired it without any problem. Why was
  I spared? Why am I here?

  I'd like to think that one of the "reasons you're here" is to tell that story. The biggest
  determinant of "purpose" is autonomous desire and independent action, mission definition and
  accomplishment. If you determine your goal to be to sit around all day picking at your feet with
  your toe knife, then that's the mission of the day.

  I'm glad you made it dude and thanks for sharing the flash. I've added it to my collection and if
  you don't mind I'll archive its meaning. The meme (in the evolutionary sense) will replicate at
  least that far.

  You're still here because your firearm malfunctioned. That's all there is to it. You can
  attribute the cause of that malfunction to some mysterious higher purpose if it helps, but that
  is what happened.

  Sounds like some kind of firing pin defect. Centerfire primers are very reliable. If I had to
  guess, the firing pin isn't consistently striking the primer in center. Or a weak firing pin
  strike. Perhaps because the gun was angled in a weird position. Were there any firing pin strike
  marks on the shell after the first firing attempt?

  Anyways, you should probably find the mechanical cause and get it fixed -- wouldn't be nice if
  the same malfunction ends up costing your life later on, should you need to rely on that gun in a
  home defense situation or such.
