That might've worked, if the Southerners hadn't interbred with so many of them that you couldn't
figure out who was white and who wasn't, and in any case if Lincoln had ever tried to actually do
anything BEFORE the War the South would've chimped out twice as hard.
It's hard to imagine what he could have actually done. They revolted almost as soon as he was
inaugurated. There's no reasoning with such a morally and intellectually corrupt society as the
antebellum South.

The South doesn't WANT to be ignorant, fat, etc.: they want to be circa-Louis XVI era French
royalty.
Look at antebellum fashion, their plantation architecture, their supposed "southern decorum" and
"honor." If you take the antebellum South at its word when it makes claims about its right or
moral obligations towards the enslavement of black men, there's the overwhelming attitude of
condescension, as though the South were somehow HELPING black men by enslaving them and divesting
them of their natural-born rights: in other words, essentially acting like the worst parodies
possible of the Marie Antoinette nobility.
All worthy of the South despised and/or despise slavery: Twain, Douglass, Faulkner, whatever. But
it's easier to pretend that the blacks are the source of all of the South's problems instead of
grappling with the fact that the white South's only non-black cultural heritage is one of moral
decay for the sake of money and the opportunity to roleplay as lords and ladies.
