Um... click on a tower. A status box for that tower will replace your "purchase box". If you have
enough money (the number in the rightmost box), there'll be a boldface message in the lower-right
corner of the status box (it only appears when you have enough money). Click on it and your tower
upgrades.

I learned down the line that initial placement is key.
So, for people who haven't figured it out, save up for the $2,000 cross thing as early as you
can, and then for the $5000 upgrade later, since some quick figuring notes that this is the most
damage per dollar of any of the towers and upgrades.
I can't quite figure out what else to do, but in retrospect, I should have placed the blue ones
more strategically to cover the whole area, since they slow things down.
