There IS Katakana... Infact this is probably all you need to learn pre-kanji...
Though I agree, maker needs to accept ja/ju/jo.

Kana includes both katakana and hiragana -- it's everything that's not kanji. Also, like all
Japanese nouns, kana is both singular and plural.
