*nix is a much smaller target and has fewer commercial programs, so there are fewer patches.
Windows especially is a large target, and lots of companies are trying to sell their products,
which means new features are more important than making sure the product works decently. When we
as consumers do things like buy games on pre-order or on the first day of release, or when we
just grumble and install the millionth patch and do not hold the software companies accountable,
we reenforce the cycle.
