what does it mean when we live in a world in which this is no longer the case. anyone born after
2009 or so will have no frame of reference for what white noise is, as it does not occur in their
universe naturally. the only time any modern person (outside of a shithole country i guess)
encounters white noise is in shit like this, either because it is a e s t h e t i c, creepy, or
because it evokes "blankness"
but it doesn't mean blankness anymore. people just use it that way because it's been used that
way for decades, and these sorts of people are unoriginal and derivative as fuck.

background radio noise of the universe, mostly from stars, then trying to interpret it as a
encoded data.
its not even random, it usually has patterns in the form of bands.
unless you mean from magnetic tape, like vhs. That static is actually pretty random, since its
just the orientation of iron atoms.

how then would one convey what this image (likely) intends? what is the modern equivalent of
emptiness, etc.? if you say color bars, fuck you. i'm not an artist with the goal of creating a
piece like this, but off the top of my head: a broken phone screen, a "media offline" message in
your video editor of choice, a deleted video screen from youtube, "no new messages," that sort of
thing. not saying they work as well visually (the broken screen has the most potential?), or even
that they're more "original," but they are miles more meaningful to our common experience now,
today.

hey admin, when you finally fix this it would be an excellent opportunity to increase the max
file size limit to at least 15 mb so we can post a bunch of flashes that we've been wanting to
post for more than 5 years.
15 mb is still nothing in current year but would enable us to upload so many more swfs.

never thought about it. whenever i see white noise i remember as a kid i looked at it sometimes
when the antenna cable was out of the TV, like when it was being swapped for the NES cable.
today's kids won't have a reference like that.
here in sweden, at least around where i grew up, we used to call it "myrornas krig", which means
"the war of the ants", because it is like black ants fighting with red ants (represented by the
white color)

This doesn’t work because you’re taking the definition of a skeumorph - which is mostly a part of
design philosophy or pertaining to design features that used to serve a tangible purpose, but now
don’t - and extrapolating the definition to fit the abstract meaning an artist may give a certain
element.
Where this fails is that, unlike the tangible purpose a design decision may have once occupied,
this meaning can be passed down and, rather than being tied to an express technical purpose, it
is only tied down to what people or artists connect it to, which are just abstract concepts that
won’t cease to exist. “Meaning” in the sense you’re talking about has nothing to do with
skeumorphs. By that logic, old idioms that don’t have any technical meaning to us, should have no
abstract meaning as well, which is just false.
