[_] What are we gonna do when flash dies? Cherno the Emo Faggot 08/19/19(Mon)00:18:15 No.3399819

So I was fucking around on jewgrounds the other day, and apparently Tom Fulp is being the messiah
of flash. Get this, they've fucking created their own version of flash.

  Now I'm a /g/tard and I don't have windows handy, so I can't verify, but I don't think that it's
very likely that it won't work. I mean, newgrounds is in real fucking trouble if twenty fucking
years of shit goes away. But, based on what I read, it seems like the plugin is only gonna work
  for NG.

Do we have any plans in place, or are some fucking browser developers really going to rape away
our culture!? Goddamn it, I don't want this place to die. I love you all. I love what we've done,
  together, after all these years.

Inb4 wowee go kill ursefl u emo faggot: don't worry, mates! One day I will. I'll bury myself
alive and suffocate to death in a remote location far from civilization, and I'll take a scuba
tank with just a little bit of chlorine in it down with me to prolong my suffering~! No one will
ever find me. It'll be like a miracle, and everyone whose life I've tainted be association will
  be better~! o(*>ω<*)o

In the meantime, though, 4 srs, what the FUCK is our exit strategy? Can we into Fulp's
  brilliance, or is /f/ doomed???

This is excellent news, thanks for telling us about the newgrounds flash player!
Though how sad is it that we need to rely on shady solutions like this that "may trigger Windows
  Defender warnings".
That page seriously need to explain a lot more, like what the hell that program is actually
doing... and does it only make flash work on newgrounds.com? Says it still "depends on Adobe's
standalone Flash plugin" so it's not really a flash player they have developed but some kind of
hook into your web browser that lets you run the standalone flash player program inside of it? Is
it like a movie that passes along inputs to a hidden running instance of the standalone player?
The web page doesn't even mention which browsers this supports! All of them seems far-fetched to
  think.

Anyway OP, flash is definitely becoming more niche in the future since people need to jump
through hoops just to play swf files. But it won't stop us from enjoying them!
There are other non-mainstream browsers that still support the flash plugin and you could even
use an old mainstream browser if you want to. Also if there are hot links to swf files there's
always the option to just "open file" directly from your browser and it downloads to your temp
folder before launching in the standalone flash player (not as good as being able to see it
  directly in the browser tho).

So you don't have to use this newgrounds player, whatever the heck it actually does. That web
page is REALLY low on information.

I won't forgive admin if /f/ actually closes on 4chan, even if it's 20 years from now. It's one
of the oldest boards on the site and should stay around forever just for historic purposes. They
could remove all links to it if they want to as long as it remains when typing the /f/ URL
directly. It'll be like a myth, a secret just like /trash/, except /f/ is the stuff of legends.

everything i could find indicates that this is a dead project. doesn't seem like something that
could play <embed> .swf files anyway so it doesn't matter.
if web developers need to update their sites to use some kind of "WebASM flash VM" it doesn't
save the thousands of flashes already online on sites that won't ever get updated again.

>> [_] Anonymous 08/19/19(Mon)01:31:46 No.3399829

1: there's always been an offline flash player downloadable from Adobe
2:browsers saying they are no longer supporting flash doesn't mean shit. The Flash plugin will
still work and do its thing but will never see improvements, as in it will maintain the state
that it's been in for years: It can interperate AS3 perfectly and there won't be new AS versions
  so who change anything
3: You can compile your own browser with integrated flash support, unless you're computer
  illiterate
4: you're a faggot newfag, get bent nigger

The fact that flash won't get updates anymore and that chrome is cutting support doesn't mean all
of those flashes will just fucking disappear.
Just switch to waterfox. My ass is off to 22chan if hiroyuki deletes this /f/ since infinity is
  already dead.

  Pretty much this.

  >Do we have any plans in place, or are some fucking browser developers really going to rape away
  our culture!?
The issue here isn't browsers, it's Adobe Flash itself. Adobe has announced they're discontinuing
Flash at the end of 2020, at which point using Adobe's player will become an increasingly large
security risk. No developer wants to be stuck with that risk, so they're trying to get away from
  Flash as soon as possible.

  >So I was fucking around on jewgrounds the other day, and apparently Tom Fulp is being the
  messiah of flash.
  >Get this, they've fucking created their own version of flash.
I hate to be "that guy", but they actually haven't. From: https://www.newgrounds.com/flash/player
  >This player also depends on Adobe's standalone Flash plugin. You may be asked to install that as
  well.
They're just bundling Adobe's standalone player with some extra shit. The issue here is Adobe's
Flash Player dying, and that will kill off Newgrounds' player as well.
If you want an actual solution: What we need is a free, properly maintained implementation of
Flash which is completely separate from Adobe Flash player. The good news is that there are a
couple of those, and the bad news is that they all suck:

  >Shumway
  https://mozilla.github.io/shumway/
JavaScript Flash implementation by Mozilla. Slow, but surprisingly functional. Killed off in 2016.

  >Swiffy
  https://developers.google.com/swiffy/
Google's web-based Flash-to-SVG converter. I've never used it, and it sounds bizarre. Killed off
  in 2016.

  >Gnash
  https://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/
Probably the most polished option, but it only supports a REALLY old version of flash, and is
almost certainly dead. Last release was 7 years ago.

  >Swfdec
Very dead. Last release was 10 years ago.

  >Lightspark
  https://lightspark.github.io/
Still very rough, with most flash files failing to run. Development is slow, but seems to still
be ongoing. Last release was 1 year ago. Probably our best hope.

  1. we know? the real issue is that in normie eyes this turns swf files into exe files that you
  need to download and run
  2. most people want updated browsers because they tend to be more secure
  3. jumping through some extreme hoops here
  4. you're one elitist motherfucker

  >Pixi-SWF
  https://github.com/pixijs/pixi-swf
Fork of shumway, last updated April 2018. Seems like they only planned to support AS3 tho.

Problem is there's no financial incentive to make a modern browser add-on for flash, always just
a bunch of passionate people that eventually grow bored or have other more important things get
  in their way in life.
If there was a reliable 25k USD reward for a fully functional modern flash add-on for firefox
(50k if it worked in both firefox and chrome) i'm sure it would get done because there's a carrot
at the end of the tunnel. 50k is a lot of money in some parts of the world, even if split between
  10 people.

  >Pixi-SWF
Neat. I figured there was an opportunity for a Shumway fork while I was making the list, but I
didn't realise that someone had already started one.

  >Problem is there's no financial incentive to make a modern browser add-on for flash, always just
a bunch of passionate people that eventually grow bored
I think it's more than just a lack of financial reward, there's also a lack of prestige. Flash
isn't the "hot new thing", it's basically dying with most of the remaining interest being in
historical preservation. Combine that with the very hard work of trying to reverse engineer a
proprietary format, and it's pretty easy to see why the attrition rate for projects is so high.
