But it changed. And the internet along with it. And seeing as though the other boards are at their state right now, not to mention other chans, might as well talk about it here. Where is the internet going now? Shouldn't we do something to prevent it from changing for the worse? For me I noticed the environment here went from laughing at terrible things together as a place where outcasts can support other outcasts. Compare that to now. "Cope. Seethe. Have sex." It's less coexisting together in an environment that doesn't really understand them and more a training ground for fighting coexistence with everything you got. Sure. Back then there was "trolling" and whatnot. But in 14 years it's gotten more...extreme. Overboard. What happened? Can we actually talk about this shit? This has dragged the overall maturity level (in terms of creative shitposting and vulgar discourse like calling each other faggots) down considerably and it shows particularly in environments like /v/ or even reddit where the same shit gets recycled endlessly instead of living for a week and dying like everything else that happens on the internet these days. >> [_] Anonymous 03/21/20(Sat)16:28:18 No.3422224 >>3422222 check'd >> [_] Anonymous 03/21/20(Sat)16:43:31 No.3422226 songname? >> [_] Anonymous 03/21/20(Sat)17:38:18 No.3422230 >>3422226 Deference for Darkness from the halo 3: odst sound track, 2009 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWh9l8RSkPk I don't regularly come to /f/, but it's neat that some of the more fringe boards are becoming time capsules in a sense. People are too used to linking their services together, sure it's convenient, but no one considers what they are giving away. Drunk anon, out. >> [_] Anonymous 03/21/20(Sat)19:32:09 No.3422243 smartphones, generalization of the internet. everyone from ages through five to fifty got access to it. i'm not one for "teh ebin sekrit club" argument, but it has its points. internet got what ponies got: pretense of a retardation was soon taken seriously by actual retards, and here we are: old and bloated husks of what were. the general atmosphere has changed, too. it's not the internet in particular. development develops, they say. >>3422240 there is too much consumption of entertainment. where there was time and thought put into what we considered funny, nowadays it's far more effective to do the same shit everyone else does and pump it up with hype etc. twitter screencap with a witty remark, plus perhaps one or two of those yellow cancer balloons is the staple of "meme". someone is genuinely funny? put a text over it and you have your internet fame. never stop doing it. never stop overproducing it. who the fuck reads comments sections anymore? what is it even for, if not for mome memes? >>3422241 i agree to this social profile issue. my output doesn't require my name or age to be valified/disqualified. why must there always be a scapegoat? why must there be a "who" when someone or something fucks up and topples over? it's madness. it's over. but that doesn't mean it cannot begin again. seems like we're about to repeat history from 100 years ago, so i don't think what we had will never be born again. congratulations, humanity, you never fucking learned. all the goddamn information in the goddamn world, and you didn't listen. i'll see you anons after the ragnarok. the ride isn't over. >> [_] Anonymous 03/21/20(Sat)19:52:35 No.3422248 >>3422243 Drunk anon here, Humanity didn't learn, because it's composed of individuals. Thus, history will repeat itself. All the new individuals will make the same mistakes. Evolution is too slow a process to compensate. To beging again means to make your base on new ground, perhaps TOR? But you all know, you are here forever. As will I be. My true fear is that internet will be just a slave for market forces. "For the economy", "for the markets", "for the social data" (some of which might be good for the whole, tracking epidemics and such). Your free speech will be taken away, because someone will benefit for it. And you gowernment will happily agree, since, hey, it'll boost the economy. >> [_] Anonymous 03/21/20(Sat)23:31:34 No.3422260 The biggest issue is one thing: Moderation. We don't have the freedom we used to. You can't even call someone a Nigerian without getting banned. Of course the reason behind this is more people on the internet, etc. as other Anons pointed out. We basically have to follow the format of 4chan as it is now or you'll get your thread deleted quickly, it's terrible. >> [_] Anonymous 03/21/20(Sat)23:38:29 No.3422261 >>3422260 Going back to this, you cannot post the wrong opinion or wrong words online ANONYMOUSLY. The point of an anonymous board is literally to be able to say what you want to. I understand banning gore and cp, but threads related to the board topic get deleted all the time just because the jannies feel it's off-topic or inflammatory. This is just on 4chan too, we all know how bad it is outside of this website. We should just go back to IRC. >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)01:07:49 No.3422268 >>3422261 totally, or we could solve this by assinating Hiro and firing the jannies and mods to start anew. I desperately wish, because this could be fixed so easily if Hiro wasn't such a Coronaboy. I wish I had the money to buy 4chan from him, or the skills to take it by force. it's not fair /f/rens >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)01:55:09 No.3422273 I wrote a long comment and then deleted it. I don't know what I'm saying. I first visited 4chan in 2009, but just lurked and participated in a couple anon hackerraids. I mostly browsed reddit for the past decade. However for about 2 years from January 2014 to January 2016 I did some weird stuff and while the rest of the world was getting smartphones, I completely avoided pop-culture, the internet and social media, video games, and other entertainment. When I came back it turned to utter garbage. Everything sucked. Something happened in 2014 or 2015 and it was not good. Reddit sucked, and only keeps getting worse. You can't even call people faggots anymore. Facebook sucked so bad I went from posting often before to pretending I don't use my account and only using messenger. And every month reddit, only gets worse. I don't even know how it gets worse than it already is, but they succeed. The entire culture has changed. A comment that would ensure discussion and upvotes in 2009-2013 just gets downvotes or removed today. 4chan on the other hand remains familiar. I don't have a good comparison between what it feels like today vs back then. But it's one of the last places remaining of the old internet. That's why there's been so many reddit-fugees the past few years. If reddit didn't suck so hard at everything, 4chan would actually be better as well. Something this site needs isn't less moderation, but different moderation. Mods are not gods anymore. Hiro has never been loved. That part of the culture is gone. People need to be publically banned for being faggots. Hidden removals don't do anything. That's why reddit is suffering, because people can't post something remotely controversial because it might get removed. I don't know. The new internet sucks and it probably won't come back ever. 4chan might get fixed temporarily if some filthy rich anon who wanted to be moot when he grew up gives hiro a fat check for this site and isn't a total retard. >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)02:18:43 No.3422277 >>3422222 Abe Simpson CHEK'D >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)06:43:24 No.3422292 >>3422273 as time goes on, the internet will further and further be colonized and set in place websites like this, even 4chan nowadays, is less of a fringe culture and just another part of life, it is normalized this will not come back unless people create their own communities in the view of older ones as this will not happen naturally again >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)08:39:44 No.3422295 The problem with 4chan in particular is it being too fast and too popular. Too many people posting and nobody types out a thought out post anyways because the next 50 waves of spam will annihilate it in 1 hour anyways. There still are smaller, very niche imageboards where you have posts from 2011 still getting discussion, they may be slow but there are active users there and discussion is kept at a high level. >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)09:59:57 No.3422300 thank god /f/ is a slow board, i can write a full-fledged reply here. 1. Google's owneship of the largest video platform and search engine has effectively "monopolized" the internet. It has been proved that they purposely skewer search results to push their own agenda, whatever that is (Project Veritas). This renders finding new websites like you would in the "good old days" or getting into the "weird part of the internet" to be nearly impossible. It naturally feels inorganic and demoralising. 2. 4chan becoming mainstream and getting rules more loose than ever. Newfags will scream that 4chan is the place where you're supposed to be able to post whatever you want, but the exact opposite is true. Back in the day, you'd get banned for the most absurd reasons possible and mods ruled with a mighty fist (or at least tried to). You'd get banned for attentionwhoring, blatant spam, making low quality posts (lmao u took him 2 da bar??). I remember moot specifically banning every single brony in a thread on /b/, which was hilarious. Since moot stopped giving a fuck ages ago, left, and now we're ruled by chinkmoot, absolutely no quality-assurance rules are instated. Gatekeeping is an absolute need if you want to get any kind of serious, actually connected community, that's how the 4chan "community" was built in the first place. Threads get filled with random spam, normalfags running rampant, the mods are fucking asleep or don't care. (cont.) >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)10:02:43 No.3422301 3. Lack of alternatives. If you want to watch videos on the internet, you have to do it on youtube, there isn't a single decent alternative besides maybe vidlii and lbry but those are still crap. And since youtube effectively dictates what you see on there, they completely control your experience. If you want to use a search engine, you use google, all the other "private" search engines are garbage and mostly just fetch off bing. And so on. I get why an alternative video website hasn't really taken off but why isn't there a single "good" search engine, communication network, *chan or anything of such sort baffles me. 4. Lack of filters. All of this normalfaggy shit flooding the internet wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't in everyone's face constantly. There is no way to filter out the degenerate spam you get shown down you on a daily basis on websites like this one, social networks etc. You can scream "muh censorship" all you want but the only thing this would stop are pointless arguments, spam and passive-agressiveness as people wouldn't be basically auto-annoyed on a daily basis. 5. Lack of user freedom. Social networks don't let you do ANYTHING that it isn't specifically built for. On websites like forums, or even 4chan, you could fuck about with the way you're meant to post and encourage this kind of out-of-the-box thinking to others. (cont.) >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)10:05:39 No.3422303 6. All the issues described above render the average anon grumpy and unwilling to communicate. Little things like flash going ""obsolete"" and such are certainly problems aswell, but those are bound to happen, whereas the other problems I described above seem like they could be easily solved but aren't. I'd call this cancer, but this is something far greater, like an AIDS-HIV-Corona seven headed hydra ready to rape your anus, spreading wildly. >>3422260 >You can't even call someone a Nigerian without getting banned When did you get banned, what board? As far as I know, you are absolutely allowed to post that. "FUCK NIGGERS AND JANNIES" is literally a meme some boards (like /biz/) and noone gives a fuck. Sounds like you're repeating what you've been told is the problem with 4chan. >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)11:04:48 No.3422309 >>3422300 >>3422260 >>3422261 >>3422268 so what is it now? too much or too little moderation? the wrong kind of moderation (bad in effort, invisible with no impact on visitors, outside-internet-agendas) >>3422301 people claiming that there are "no alternatives" are part of the problem itself there ARE video alternatives (bitchute, some dating back into the 2000s) and there ARE search alternatives (searx, duckduckgo was okay at some point) if you are unwilling to sacrifice even the smallest amoung of user friendliness to go somewhere else, you're just begging to be exploited >> [_] Anonymous 03/22/20(Sun)12:18:23 No.3422314 >>3422241 something that i notice still, is that when i play unreal tournament 99 online, the people there are like a relic from a past time they still talk and act 1 to 1 like back in 2000 whenever i play and see that chat, it is so different itsabsolutely jarring to see the old lingo and speak, and i participate and act exactly the same despite how weird it feels to read and write the different, ancient jargon |
