He didn't have cover. He was in front of an open door. The cop, while out of frame, should be
behind his door or behind the trunk of his car. That's how you're supposed to handle these
situations. That's why, when you're pulled over by two cops, one stays behind your trunk and the
other approaches the window.
Cover doesn't stop bullets, especially from long rifles. But it does obscure the vision of those
that are firing. That's why the first rush wounded the cop and you could still hear him breathing
regularly. The assaulter began to walk away at that point. Fucking bad move on the cops behalf to
keep firing. Almost seems panicked.
This is a scary situation. You don't know if he has a knife (in CQC, a knife is as deadly as a
gun), or a gun in the car. So you can't rush him and attempt to disarm, and obviously retreating
didn't work for him.
If the cop killed him and it turned out he didn't have a gun, fired, sued, bankrupt. If the cop
did, still police brutality, as the aggressor showed no signs until he pulled the long rifle.
The one thing that could have saved him was a fucking partner. And that really sucks.
