I keep wondering.
Watching old stuff from around 2001, the earliest part of flash history just looks so distinct.
Like, what gives this clearly distinct look of those old flashes?
I'm guessing the technology (flash) didn't really change fundamentally since then, so why do
animations from after the second half of the 2000s look so much better than stuff from before,
assuming both were made with relative high production value for the time.
In which ways did flash creation progress so visibly over time?

Interesting question.
I think back in the day it was experimental.
people simply used static pictures and did not obsess over key frame animation.
Not that there even was any tutorials on this or anything.
It was armatures doing what interested them.

i think a lot of people jumped in before the dot net bubble popped, making animations without
really being animators in hopes that they would eventually make money from it. and yeah there
weren't any tutorials that unified them to use the same techniques.
but a lot also happened with the swf itself. video wasn't supported at all until 2002. the flv
format was made 2003, i guess in 2002 it got hardcoded into the swf file itself. not until 2005
the "On2 VP6" codec was supported, before this videos in flash looked terrible. filters (blur
effect) wasn't available until 2005 either.

hmm, I think video support wouldn't be that huge of a deal if you don't want to just throw
premade clips everywhere, gif was always an option
but filters, now that's a very crucial thing coming in later than I imagined

but with this flash or others there are oftentimes intros which made me believe it was done by a
at least semi professional studio
or think about shit like pornholio or early music videos, they earned money with that
I guess it was just a very natural progression with people learning optimal coding and keyframe
animation over time and sharing that knowledge let to the average joe starting out way better
than before
of course the eventual genius always existed
just look at zone, sure his old animations look crude today but they still look very appealing
visually
what you said probably holds true
real keyframe animation looks way superior if you're not awefully well versed in the art of
tweening and people back then probably just thought that tweening was the way to use flash and
didn't even consider traditional animation
